Unit 4719

Category: layer    dug in 1999

Area: South

Site Sketch: Click here to open in a new window

Interpretive Categories: accumulation,stabling

Data Category Information: Description: penning; Deposition: heterogeneous

Dimensions: 4.6m+ w-e, 1.8m+ n-s, 0.03 to 0.08m thick

Description: Same as (4710) except charcoal is moderate, less bone, lenses thicker and there is more grey and less orange.

Discussion: Layer very similart to (4710) except the bands are thicker and slightly less well defined and there is more charcoal. Probably still a stabling deposit but other activities may have occurred in the same space and stabling may only be a minor component.

Recognition: distinct orangey colour / thin bands

Definition: deep sounding / wall / arbitrary

Execution: trowel

Condition: moist

Consistency: soft

Colour: mixed - bands are orange, light to mid grey, light to mid greyish brown

Texture: mainly clay

Bedding: compound layered

Inclusions: frequent phytoliths, occasional bone / obsidian / charcoal

Post-depositional Features: deep sounding, roots, burrows, wendy

Basal Boundary: faint, smooth, anthropogenic, sloping down at west end

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Flot 2816 (3) Flot 2823 (2) Flot 2818 (5) Flot 2819 (4) Some dry sieved also First spit of the second possible stabling deposit from space 181. The colour is white to medium brown with a small amount of burning of the smallest fragments. Both 03 and 07 size bones are present, but only one bone - most of a sheep radius - is identifiable to taxa. Other bones are largely ribs and long bone fragments, especially long bone. There is also a fragment of human skull. The smaller fraction looks very similar to the previous stabling deposit sequence (4710/15/16), but unlike them there are no larger bones, but a higher percentage of medium long bone fragments. There is also one bone with an extraordinarily clean, polished surface making is a light yellow/white colour. The polish appears natural, but the method is uncertain - it is not digested but perhaps exposure to an acid environment? Or water polishing? Four 4mm flotation, 100% sorted, samples were recorded at a later date. All of the samples were similar in nature containing mostly sheep-sized bone fragments, although 07-sized animal bones were not uncommon. The surface condition of the bone suggested exposure to an acidic environment and, as noted above, this may not be from being digested as a very high proportion of the bone exhibits this effect. One possible explanation could be that the bones were eroded by the urine if the unit was indeed a stabling deposit. Further surport for this interpretation is two very highly worn dp2's in sample 4, which exhibit extensive root resorption suggesting that they were shed teeth. Other characteristics of the samples are low proportions of burning at low temperature (ca. 5%) and minimal weathering. Last number = 70
