Unit 8010
Category: layer dug in 2003
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: oven floor
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: baked; Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Discussion: This layer is considerably more consolidated than those above and lies directly over what may be an oven floor of very compacted dark material. This unit may represent a replacement floor overlying previous ones. The part of this layer abutting the oven wall may represent a plaster lining of the wall (about 1 cm thick) but is impossible to distinguish from the rest of the unit material (can be seen more clearly in the layers below).
Recognition: layer of hearth fill or possibly floor with a very light colour - possibly high plaster content. Very dark layers above and below.
Definition: Clear colour contrast.
Execution: Trowelled in plan.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: Hard and quite compact
Colour: light greyish white
Texture: loam
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: small gravel pieces <5%
Post-depositional Features: none
Basal Boundary: clear change in colour and surface from uneven white to a dark compacted surface.
