Unit 1278
Category: layer dug in 1996
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: room fill
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Dimensions: 2.15 x 0.35 x 0.05 m
Discussion: Basal floor deposit /room fill. East edge arbitrary section from 95 when other part of deposit removed.
All finds came from near base of deposit & inter face with floor. Deposit along wall face (west edge) rather difficult - wall face unclear in many places & also seems to have bowed out & slumped forward so part of (1278) lies under section of wall.

Unit description: Consists of 1 large fragment of equid scapula, somewhat weathered, some manganese staining. Plus one tiny bit of young sheep-size rib included with it. Found more. Smallish unit with a couple of ID elements and a few bone scraps. Light brown color with minimal weathering and overall manganese staining. Unit is characterized by sheep-size elements. Almost no burning. Sample 11 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. Relatively large sample for Building 1. Mostly sheep-size, with a little large mammal, and some bird, fish, and microfauna. One of the bird bones has an old break, suggesting it may have been eaten rather than intrusive. All body areas represented. Bone quite fragmented, including articular ends of long bones; possible bone grease debris. Some burning, a little digestion, somewhat weathered. Some coherence in that the 'bone grease' bits could come from the same animal, or a single episode of processing. This unit has a somewhat more primary look than most of the Building 1 floor units. It probably includes a component of material left or placed on the floor at abandonment (scapulae, bone grease left-overs), perhaps some background trampled floor material, and a bit of the fill (water worn bits, probably some others). Except for the scapulae and other big pieces, could be sweepings. Last number = 42Figurine Records: No GroundStone Records: No Heavy Residue Records: No Microfaunal Records: No
