Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Unit exists entirely as >4mm flot samples: S5, S8, S15, S16, S17, S18, S9. Each are fairly small, 100% sorted and recorded. All IDs are put together in one bag. Scrap is bagged separately. S5 is a small unit, 100% sorted and recorded. Mostly scrap with mainly sheep size, with some cattle size pieces. Diagnostics consists of sheep-goat horn core pieces, a sheep metapodial, a sheep-goat calcaneum. Condition: fragmentation high with many pieces of 1 cm length, but also a fair amount of c. 3 cm length; surface condition shows slight weathering; about 25% is burnt black and just a few pieces calcined; just a few pieces appear digested, but no evident gnawing. Integrity fairly high in terms of condition - although only some is obviously burnt, the whole unit has a ginger colour, suggestive of being heated? Overall, this could be a floor unit, with consumption refuse having been trampled or thrown into hearth and then raked out (to explain charring)? Records = F1-28. S8 is a small unit 100% sorted and recorded. Mostly scrap and sheep size (long bones, ribs, verts and skull all represented - the largest fragment being a lumbar vertebra 03 size - this specimen was removed in 2003 for radiocarbon dating), but some cattle size long bone frags. Only 3 diagnostics - a distal metapodial frag of sheep/goat, and a sheep/goat tooth, and a neonatal sh/gt metapodial. Condition: surfaces are fair, not very weathered, although smaller fragments are a bit battered, but survival of neonatal bone indicates fair survival conditions. About 20% burnt, mostly black, but a few are calcined white. There is no gnawing and no apparent digestion. Altogether, this unit seems to represent consumption refuse of highly processed bone (since fragmentation is high, but condition fairly good), some then thrown into fire (the burnt material). Lots of eggshell removed from here. Records = F29-54. S15 is a small unit with mainly 03 size scrap, with a few 07 size long bone fragments. Diagnostics are a sheep femur head, cattle horn core fragments, sheep/goat tooth fragments. Scrap includes long bone frags (including a very young one), and a tiny bit of vert and skull. Condition: fair, not very weathered; mostly ginger-brown in colour, seemingly heat treated, Some charred and calcined. None gnawed and only one seems digested. Fragmentation: lots of 1 cm fragments but some up to 5 cm, so varied. Interpretation: as other samples. Some fish, amphibian and eggshell fragments removed. Records = F55-75. S16 is a small unit. As with other samples, mainly 03 size scrap with one frag of 07 long bone. 2 diagnostics - a sh/g size distal metapodial and a sh/gt size sesamoid. Other info same as S5, 8, 15 above. Records = F76-95. S17 is small, mostly sheep sized scrap (long bones, ribs, bit of skull). Diagnostics are only 2 sheep/gt horn core frags, a sh/gt tarsal and a fox phalanx. About 50% burnt black, rest brownish as if in contact with heat. Condition: as with other samples. interpretation as with other samples, but more burnt material may indicate deposition into fire before moving to floor/rake-out? Records F96-111. S18, small unit; diagnostics are sheep-sized (a carpal, patella and skull and mandible frag). Scrap has sheep-sized long bone and vert, and a couple of indeterminate cattle-size, plus one 02 size long bone. About 10% burnt, low temp except for one high temp. None gnawed, a couple digested. Interpretation as above. Records = F112-124. S19 is small, all sheep-size. Few diagnostics (sheep horn core, sh/gt calcaneum and carpal); scrap consists of sheep-size long bones, rib, vert (relatively big cervical fragment), skull. 10% burnt black. Seem
