Discussion: 14278 is a rubble fill that is cut by later features. It is mainly composed of mortar and fragments of mudbrick. Some mudbricks are fairly large and complete and seem to be 'floating' in the fill. The fill butts up to the mudbrick wall (feature 2408) on its eastern most edge.

The later features that truncate the fill are graves and pits. Overall, the fill is heavily disturbed by burrows and some rootlets. There are two large apparently early Calcolithic pot sherds, indicated on the sketch, in the fill. The other finds are mainly from the burrows.

Due to the sensitivity of the recent news of the 'Islamic graves', the fill will be arbitrarily cut as indicated on the sketch. This is to prevent any disturbance to the neighbouring grave feature until it is due to be excavated.

Recognition: Easily identifiable fragments of mortar and mudbrick abutting feature 2408.

Definition: Distinguishable on its eastern edge where it abuts feature 2408. Unclear on all other edges due to truncation and limits of excavation.

Execution: Trowel, shovel, hands, hand mattock.

Condition: Still, warm and sunny.

Consistency: Quite compact.

Colour: Light grey and patches of off-white (mortar).

Texture: Hard, compact silty loam with some sand.

Bedding: Mixed (mortar and mudbrick), heterogenous.

Inclusions: Ceramic sherds, few pieces of obsidian, and some bone.

Post-depositional Features: Animal burrows (lots) and some rootlets.

Basal Boundary: Quick, straight on eastern edge where it abutts feature 2408.
