Discussion: Cut for wall F1523, F1533 (3x extant bricks only), associated with B53. Not fully excavated by end of 2006 season. Evidence seems to suggest that a cut or kind of scoop was made through the midden material in Space 261, with the ground subsequently being made up to level for building purposes. The cut is visable in the east facing section c.f wall pics for F1523. Layers (14322), (12552), (12525), and (12521), are all deposits located broadly in a n/s direction along side the east side of the wall F1523, suggesting that they have formed in a cut. If they have a possible sequence for the walls could be: (1) Wall cut. (2) Foundation layer (14322). Starting to make up the ground. (3) Further foundation layer (12552) and backfill. This layer appeared to go under and also against the outter part of the wall F1523. (4) Further backfill with layers (12521) and (12525). Both layers being above the last course of both F1523 and F1533.

A potential problem with this situation is that the southern end of the cut looks as if it does not run the full length of the wall. As mentioned above it is visable in the east facing section of wall F1523, but the wall does continue south under the baulk. Further excavation south may not be possible, but when the F1523 is released on it west side, and layers can be linked up, it should become clear what is happening. There does of course lie the possibility that no cut was made, and that ground was made up accordingly and the wall/s subsequently planted and then midden material from Space 261 thrown up against the wall to protect it from the elements.
