Unit description: F 248 subsampled for ZooMS (DCO 2014).
A fairly substantial amount of bone was recovered from unit 1576. The species represented by these were sheep/goat, cattle, equid, pig, dog, fox and two pieces of bird. Additionally a few fragments of antler, unidentifiable to species, showed the presence of deer. Overall, wild species are fairly well represented and this is similar to unit 1629, although caprines are still the most common taxa in both units. The condition of the bone, with minimal weathering, but high fragmentation indicates that the material is post-consumption waste. Dogs have gnawed some of the bone, and left digested bone but not in very high proportions unlike unit 1629. A further difference is the proportion of burnt bones, in unit 1576 approximately 15% of the bones had been exposed to low temperatures. The body parts are represented approximately in the correct proportions with the possible exception of scapula. Despite the fragile nature of these bones, the number from caprines appears high compared to other units, but not excessively so. A number of the bones could have come from one dog, including six articulated dog vertebrae, dog teeth at similar stages of development and probably articulated phalanges. Other interesting fragments include part of a bone ring and bone point. There was meant to be a 4mm flotation sample but this could not be found. Last number = F286Figurine Records: Yes
