Unit description: 2 DNA samples: cattle metapodia, X3 + X4. X1 is an antler pendant. X2 is a piece of cattle horn core. There was substantial amount of dry sieve material from unit 1579. Size categories 03, 05 and 07 were all well represented with most of the material consisting of long bone shaft and rib fragments. Elements representing different areas of the body were present in approximately normal proportions. As well as being highly fragmented, the bone displayed little weathering, but digested bone was common and burnt bone formed about 2-3% of the unit and was mostly small pieces of bone burnt to low temperatures. The identfiable material was mostly caprine, followed by pig, equid and cattle in slightly lower proportions. Fox was represented by a calcaneus fragment and fragmented antler showed the presence of deer, although none of these pieces were complete enough to be able to determine species. Overall the material has low integrity and seems to be from a general midden depost. Interesting finds included a fragment of a bone ring, a bone point with numerous cuts near the tip. Additionally one pathological cattle first phalanx seemed to be a congenital abnormality. 4mm. flotation sample 1, 100% sorted, was recorded for diagnostics only. Most of this sample was unidentifiable frags mainly from 03 sized animals but four vertebrae from very small fish were also present. Last number = F245Figurine Records: Yes
