Discussion: Layer of fill in cut 1544 beneath 1601. Similar composition to above layers, although slightly higher in charcoal content. The deposit appears to slope downwards from East to West. It lies immediately above a charcoal/ash deposit ( the basal deposit of the cut), towards the Eastern edge, but towards the centre of the area, an extremely hard clayey chunk protrudes. At its Western extent, a patch of sandier material extends beneath the section left unexcavated. The layer peeled distinctly from those beneath and from the Southern edge of the cut. Two pieces of pottery were removed to avoid the floatation machine, joining to form the corner of a base sherd.
