Unit 20180
Category: Layer dug in 2012
Area: TPC
Interpretive Categories: Natural deposit over time
Data Category Information: none
Dimensions: 10 m x 6 m x 0.15 m
Discussion: We created this unit on the basis of having found many walls (or the tops of walls) and building material in the northern half of the trench. Excavating the burial put time constraints on our excavation strategy, so we had to subdivide the trench to continue working in the southern half. Because of the artificial northern boundary-- not because of evident soil change-- this layer was identified as distinct from 20156, although the emerging stratigraphy in the northern half did guide our placement of the northern limit of 20180. We ended the layer when many walls and pits became apparent (see plan 12/623). Finding iron in this layer seems problematic for identifying f. 3931 as Neolithic, but likely relates to the erosion and post-depositional disturbance processes on the mound, especially since this layer is so close to the surface.
Note on total deposit volume:
Unsieved volume was not measured, so total volume is unknown.
Recognition: under 20156, walls and urials appeared in northern half; southern half of trench sectioned off to continue digging
Definition: northern extent determined by apparent features; other edges = edges of trench
Execution: hoe and pick
Condition: hot, shaded
Consistency: firm to friable
Colour: greyish brown
Texture: silty clay loam
Bedding: compound
Inclusions: pottery, bone, obsidian, clay objects, groundstone, iron, flint
Post-depositional Features: animal burrows, sinking of datum
Basal Boundary: appearance of many walls and pits

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
