Discussion: This is a layer of extremely burnt soil next to wall f. 3933. It was discovered underneath the more compact silty clay loam unit 20156, which continues to extend over the rest of the trench. 20181 appears to be a very contained, small deposit of burnt, dark soil bounded to the west by wall f.3933 and trailing off to the south. 

 

Recognition: clear change in soil texture and color underneath 20156. 

Definition: defined by soil texture/color contrast 

Execution: trowel/hoe 

Condition: hot, shaded 

Consistency: friable 

Colour: mottled--mostly extremely dark brown and black 

Texture: ashy silt loam 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: mud brick, bone, pottery-- many burnt artifacts, ash, charcoal

Basal Boundary: soil color change
