Unit 20222
Category: Layer dug in 2012
Area: TPC
Interpretive Categories: heterogeneous deposit
Data Category Information: Deposition: buried soil
Discussion: This layer is a heterogeneous natural deposit covering almost the entire extent of the southern half of the trench. It contained a mixture of artifacts from many periods. Removing it revealed u. 20224 to be a construction/moulding for a basin, and revealed more of the mud-brick deposits that seem to predate the Roman/Hellenistic wall f. 3951 we are still coping with temporally.
Note on total deposit volume:
Unsieved volume calculated from dimensions, not tallied
Recognition: next heterogeneous layer under u20180 - determined by many pits at this level
Definition: soil color-- not orange like u. 20224 or 20221
Execution: hoe, pick, trowel
Condition: cool, shaded
Consistency: friable to firm
Colour: mostly greyish brown, with some darker and redder laminations
Texture: silty clay loam
Bedding: compound
Inclusions: pottery, bone, groundstone, obsidian
Post-depositional Features: animal burrows, sinking of datum
