Unit 20487
Category: Layer dug in 2012
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: midden arbitrary layer
Data Category Information: none
Dimensions: 2,6m NS x 2,6m EW x 0.16m thick
Discussion: This is another arbitrary layer in the midden, space 489 below building 108. The layer was clearly laminated (brown ashy and blackish layers) in the southern part. In the northern area it was more clayish with an abundance of large sized burnt clay inclusions. Also ashy grey and black lenses were found within this layer. About 0.5 m from the southern wall there was a thin layer with brown pure sand (up to 0.02m thick and with a diameter of c. 0.3m). This was the only sand layer found in the midden so far. The arbitrary midden layer contained lots of artefacts and organic inclusions.
Recognition: Arbitrary layer of midden, different colour than around.
Definition: Up to walls in S and N, up to section wall in W, up to cut in E.
Execution: trowel, hoe, mattock
Condition: dry and hot, no wind
Consistency: loose in the S and firm in the N
Colour: mixed layered light yellow, light grey, blackish, and light brown lenses
Texture: clay, silty clay, ash, sand
Bedding: Thin layers in the south part, more mixed in the northen part
Inclusions: abundancy of charcoal and ashy inclusions in all layers except the clay layer (which contained burnt clay inclusions of sizes up to 12cm, as well as medium sized burnt oven pieces). All layers contained lots of artefacts (obsidian, worked bone and clay objects) and organic inclusions (bones and hackberry)
