Unit 19564
Category: Layer dug in 2012
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Midden Arbitrary Layer
Data Category Information: Location: in abandoned building; Deposition: finely bedded
Dimensions: 2.2m N-S By 2.6m E-W by 0.34m thick
Discussion: The unit was an arbitrary layer in the midden. It was established to remove the remaining part of the mixed clay layer in space 489. It contained an abundance of organic inclusions, areas with charcoal, and artefacts, especially clay ball fragments and lumps of burned and unburned clay. The pieces of burned clay and the clay balls were mainly found in the northern lower part of the unit, in a c. 1m wide area along wall F.3679. In the southwestern part of the unit an unusual concentration of eggshells was encountered, which was sampled (S.3) for further investigation. The layer with eggshells was about 20x5cm and 1cm thick, and it also contained several small clay balls. In the same area several large pieces of laminated clay was found. Two of them (partly in the section wall) were positioned so that the lamination was almost vertical. The eastern part of the unit, c. 0.5m along the eastern wall F.3627 differed from rest of the unit somewhat because it was more homogenous and blackish, similar to that of a midden, but contained very little artefacts compared to the rest of the unit.
