Unit 20634
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Red painted plaster layer + makeup
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: raised area (platform); Material: plaster; Deposition: layered (wall plaster); Basal Spit: painted
Discussion: This layer was highly inconsistent due to burning at the southwest corner. Because of this, the color/consistency of the layer varied throughout the platform. Towards the northeast corner, the layer was quite compact. Here, the red painted plaster layer was removed along with two distinct levels of makeup. The first was a very homogenous grey silty clay. This part was rather firm as well and functioned as a kind of preparation layer for the plaster on top. The second level of makeup was a more traditional "makeup" layer; it is a rather loose, yellowish brown layer with some inclusions. The two levels of makeup were indistinguishable from the red plaster layer in the area of the platform that was burned. This is why all three layers were removed as one unit, rather than individual layers.
This unit was very distinct because it comprised of a homogenous red plaster layer. The majority of the SW corner of this layer had been burned during the closing of Building 52. Because of this, this corner is poorly preserved and very friable. The red paint on the layer slowly eroded after initial exposure. This layer is the second definable layer in a sequence of many on the northeast platform (F 3695) of Building 52. At some point, it was constructed. After this, layer u.20615 (arbitrary, unclear how many were above/how many plaster levels it consisted of due to burning and long term exposure since the 2005 field season) was constructed. At some point, a burial cut (u.20648) was made and skeleton (sk.20655) and fill (u.20654) were deposited.
