Unit 20854

Category: Layer    dug in 2014

Area: South

Interpretive Categories: grey clay makeup of floor

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: floor (packing only)

Discussion: This unit represents a makeup layer roughly equivalent to u. 20852-- the makeup layer of western floor f. 7014 and extending onto platform f. 3508 on its western side. It is extremely difficult to discern which layers are contemporaneous when they are separated by burial cuts, as is the case in this platform, but the thickness, color, and basal boundary do seem to correspond. The floor plaster we came down upon in the center of the eastern side of this platform is quite patchy-- and more layers are preserved toward the wall than towards the cuts, presumably because it had eroded away in this area in antiquity. There were no finds in this unit, and the entirety of the unit was sent to flotation.

Consistency: extremely compact

Colour: grey

Texture: clay loam

Bedding: layered

Inclusions: Phytolith-rich for first 5 cm, especially in center of platform's eastern side. Miminal charcoal and ash.

Post-depositional Features: Cracking, cutting for burial sequence in platform (see matrix)

Basal Boundary: Came down on clean white floor plaster, though patchy in center area and more well-preserved toward wall (these layers had presumably eroded away toward the center during occupation)
