Unit 21178
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Bricks in wall
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: building; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous
Description: very eroded due to trampling from 2012 and onward
Discussion: This unit is the bricks of wall F3660, the south wall of sp 40. It seems to have been cut in the approximate middle by excavators in 2012 (?), leaving an uneven surface, that is, in its western end an additional course of bricks have survived (the 1st-2nd or 3rd course) while in the east only the first and perhaps the second survived until now. This unit has been very eroded by trampling and closeness to the surface, which made it hard to distinguish between mortar and bricks.
Three certain courses (probable no 4) were recognized before the foundations bricks which were much bigger. The bricks could not really be measured in length since they were quite eroded, but were similar to the ones in F3656 (U21303) c 60 cm. The foundation bricks were however in much better shape (perhaps reused?) ca 90 cm.
