Unit 21659

Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Midden deposit (clay lens)
Data Category Information: Location: in abandoned building; Deposition: finely bedded
Discussion: 21659 is a clay layer between two silty charcoal layers in the midden in space 490. This layer may have been placed on top of the existing midden as a way of managing the smell of waste, because the clay is packed and seems to have been placed intentionally across the full extent of the surface. Upon excavating this layer, it became evident that there were multiple adjacent clay/charcoal layers, and in some areas we took down charcoal as well as clay in an attempt to stay on the same layer across the surface of the midden. We excavated this layer using trowels.
