Unit 21660
Category: Layer dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Midden deposit
Data Category Information: Location: in abandoned building; Deposition: finely bedded
Discussion: In an attempt to better facilitate the excavation of the midden, it was decided that lenses of clay instead of charcoal should be used as unit dividers. U21660 started on a diffuse charcoal layer and consisted of mixed layers of charcoal, soot, ash, and clay lenses with inclusions of household refuse such as bone, obsidian, and some clay balls. As the midden is situated between two exterior walls of two separate buildings (B. 132 and B. 52), and the midden abuts both walls, it can almost certainly be said that the midden is more or less contemporary with these buildings and walls and that it might contain refuse from these buildings (and perhaps more). In terms of attempting to map the seasonality of the midden buildups, the eggshells suggest that at least part of what belongs to U21660 was deposited in early-mid spring.
