Unit 21728

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: Unit was initially recognized under plaster molding/edge to F 7402 as another superstructure, but was also found to be underneath the smaller sunken floor (u. 21722) to the E. The superstructure is composed of fine sandy clay, is very smooth and at a somewhat even elevation around the perimeter of the feature, probably in order to prepare for the plaster edge. The superstructure appears to be sitting on the main sunken floor plaster on the N edge, but is very thick and built up on the S edge like many of the superstructures from later phases. The layer is most likely thicker on the S edge due to the raised floor patch to the S of the hearth (Last U. 20076). The hearth superstructure may have been built up on this edge to level the area and match the height of the plaster floors and makeup. With the removal of U. 21728 on the E edge of the feature, the hearth seems to change shape and transition from an ovular to a much more circular shape, which is strange considering the superstructure/molding layers along the N, W, and S edges still seem designed for a much more ovular/rectangular hearth.
