Unit 21729
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: re-used superstructure; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: Unit is a very mixy eroded layer of sand and rubble under hearth superstructure U. 21728 and was identified as a separate unit due to the looseness of the deposit and the change in soil composition. The layer may have been constructed as packing for the superstructure above it and in order to raise the hearth level to the level of the sunken floor. This layer is underneath U. 21728 superstructure and respects U. 21731, a superstructure event that seems to be of the same material as U. 21728 yet deposited after U 21729 was added as packing. As there appear to be some larger plaster inclusions within this layer it may be that plaster floors or molded edges existed in this area at this level and then were dug out or eroded away as the hearth superstructure continued to be built up.
