Unit 21733
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Hearth superstructure
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: This unit was recognized as a new unit/superstructure layer due to the presence of large marley/plaster inclusions and lenses, unlike the previous superstructure. It does not contain a ledge that laps up onto the plaster and make up layers to the S and the dirty floor layers with a fire spot to the E (unlike U 21731) but is instead very flat regular in elevation acorss the entire perimeter of the hearth. This seems to be the superstructure that was built before preparation began for the plaster edge U. 20078. With the removal of the superstructures that created much higher, lipped edges, the hearth now appears to be sunken against the sunken floor. U.21733 seems to also sit on a very thin plaster layer, which might turn out to be an earlier incarnation of the plaster molding like U 20078, which also seems to lap up onto the sunken floor's edge.
