Unit 2176
Category: cut dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: grave cut,pit cut
Data Category Information: Description: burial
Dimensions: 0.85 m long, 0.60 m wide, 0.30 m deep
Discussion: Cut for the brave of a crouched adult inhumation. This is the primary burial in the sequence under platform F13, yet it was not the first actual inhumation. The disarticulated remains represented by skeletal elements 2506 & 2195 must be earlier remains pushed to one side prior to / during the insertion of skeleton 2169. The irregular shape of the cut may reflect this disturbance, particularly the break in slope at the base.

As the human bone team discovered hand bones from 1955 under skeleton 2169, this cut can no longer be considered a possible primary burial action. Instead, this cut should now be considered to be a re-cut, the physical traces of the action that removed 1955, and scooped out its cut before 2169 (and 1955's long bones 2506) were deposited.
A mentioned previously, I did think that the shape of this cut indicated a recutting episode may have taken place, so the bone evidence supports this.
Execution: trowel, hand shovel
Condition: warm, dry
Shape: irregular, subovoid
Sides: vary, to south they are smooth & very steep (6 in 1 to vertical), to E very steep (4 in 1), as in the W too. The N edge is more irregular and less steep
Base Break: very gentle
Base: irregular in plan, but concave
Orientation: long axis of cut E-W, but skeleton is better orientated than grave cut
