Unit 2223
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Room fill
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: This unit is the NW corner of Space 86, located between internal (partition wall to east, in unit 2221) and the external wall.
- Another arbitrary layer of room fill was dug - quite compact in places, and with some patches of crumbly plaster, but no distinctive characteristics. The fill is very similar to that in unit 2221 to the East.
- An animal jaw (A on sketch) is showing through in NE corner of unit; it will be excavated as part of the next unit.

Unit description: Small unit of dry sieve material that contains a pig mandible that has suffered extensive modern damage. 007 size animals were well represented, one tooth could be identified as cattle. NR 2002: Recorded a couple more small bags of dry sieved, and the flot to complete the unit. The additional dry sieved material consists of a few pieces of scrap: long bones, rib and indeterminate, all with rather degraded surfaces from lying too near the ground surface. Large mammal is nearly as frequent as sheep-size, and fragments are relatively large. Sample 1 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. It is a smallish sample with a few larger (3-4 cm) pieces, but mostly little crumbles, many of them digested. Sheep-size predominates here, but large mammal is present. It looks pretty reworked, like fillFigurine Records: No GroundStone Records: No Heavy Residue Records: No Microfaunal Records: No
