Unit 2231

Category: Skeleton    dug in 1997

Area: North

Data Category Information: none

Discussion: Both patella's are present, but both have shifted slightly. Both lower legs are in reasonable condition. Both feet are present, but jumbled making their position impossible to determine. Though they probably both extended Eastwards.
There are iron nail throughout the grave, and one lay between the skeletons ankles. A glass? token was found next to the head on the North side, a glass vial was next to the head on the South side. The head and upper torso appear to have sunk somewhere into the midden below - large animal burrows were directly under the human bones. A large rock sat below the skeleton's feet. The skeleton's long bones did not survive removal very well, but the rest of it survived with only minor to moderate damage. We had to cut into the midden below to remove the skull.

Body: Body lies extended and supine, with its head to the West and its feet to the East. The centre of the torso is quite disarranged and damaged - some ribs and vertebrae are out of place.

Head: Is slumped forward looking South at its own right shoulder. A roughly triangular piece of skull is missing from the forehead over the right eye., and another portion of the skull is missing at the back.

Right Arm: Lower part of the humurus missing truncated by animal burrow. Lower part of arm present but damaged lying alongside the body. Right hand is mostly gone, only a few bones remain next to the femur.

Left Arm: Lower part of the humurus missing truncated by animal burrow. Lower part of arm present but damaged lying alongside the body. Left hand is damaged and lies next to the hip.

Right Leg: Extended. Right femur badly damaged.

Left Leg: Extended. Left femur is mostly intact.

Other comments:

Surface Modifications: None noticable upon excavation, although grave fill included a lot of burnt material and a bit of burnt horn core in the eyesocket (residual?).

Unit description: Tiny unit consisting of just 2 bones: an 07 size long bone shaft, slightly burnt, and a charred piece of cattle horn core. From notes included with the pieces they appear to come from around a human skeleton, with the long bone from part inside the human skull, and the horn core from the eye socket! Since these pieces do not appear to be grave goods, it seems likely that they were part of the backfill into the grave. Condition is good in both cases. Horn core probably freshly broken. Both put in scrap.
