Unit 22660
Category: Layer dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: pocket within makeup, scoop fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: scoop; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Discussion: This unit was excavated as a separate layer from u. 226463 on the basis of Nicolo Dell'Unto's DEM model which identified areas of significant elevation change. It suggested that there might be a cut here based on the presence of a depression. We verified in the trench that there was enough visible difference in the appearance of this layer that we could justify digging it as a separate cut. It was looser and contained more rubble than the surrounding matrix, but the fill contained nothing (much less a burial) and the cut would have served no discernible purpose. This leaves the DEM based method of identifying cuts unproven by this experiment, but not necessarily disproven either.
Consistency: loose
Colour: orange
Texture: sandy silt loam
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: high in rubble content
Post-depositional Features: burning
Basal Boundary: diffuse-- increased level of compaction and fewer rubble peds, but whether this was actually a cut or was simply a recognizable pocket within u. 22643 (makeup layer)
