Unit 2513
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: platform surface
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: raised area (platform); Material: white clay; Deposition: single
Dimensions: 1.45 m long x 0.90 m wide, 0.05 m thick (max)
Discussion: This deposit would appear to be the primary surfacing of platform F.13. When 2513 + removed off it, this deposit appeared to be continuous with an early phase of red painted wall plaster. 2513 itself contained traces of plaster/mortar. It shows signs of wear, especially to south-west, and also had clearly been patched in places. Rather than trying to elucidate these patching episodes however< I treated them all as one context and removed them at the same time.
A discovered reddish patch to the south-east may reflect burning. Though it had worn away to some extent to the south of the platform edge, on its eastern edge this deposit lipped over and down the eastern face of the platform.
This deposit was on a similar physical level to 1488, the floor surface on the western side of the intervening burial intrusions. However, most of 2513 did not consist of plaster, but instead of a fine clayey material, though close to walls it becomes plastery.
GML: could this be a 'mortar' surface as is the platform was made up in layers rather than one 'massive' deposit? The lack of proper plaster surface and its stratigraphic position does leave problems if it was a used surface.
Execution: Trowel and handshovel.
Condition: Warm, windy and dry.
Consistency: Firm.
Colour: 10 YR 5/4 yellowish brown, paler and whiter where there is mortar/plaster present. Possible burnt patch= 2.5 YR 4/4 reddish brown.
Texture: Clayey loam.
Bedding: Layered- several horizontal layers of material=visible.
Inclusions: Occasional mudbrick fragments (<30 mm <2 %), occasional fragments of daub (<10 mm <2 %), occasional subangular small stones (<10 mm <2 %), very occasional scattered charcoal flecks (<2 %), crushed/layered plaster/mortar (<15 %).
Post-depositional Features: Some rootlet penetration.
Basal Boundary: Lower interface= relatively flat and reasonably well defined (0-5 mm).

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
