Unit 2558
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: levelling
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: heterogeneous
Description: Begun 1997, additions (stratigraphy and sieving / sampling) 1998
Discussion: This highly variable deposit was removed as one spit from right across the whole 'building' - or at least the area encompassed by its later walls. In some places it was mixed quite ashy material, but in others it was much more fine grained, less mixed material. The latter may represent actual demolition of the earlier structure.
Lots of animal bone, some obsidian flakes, some clay ball fragments and some 'figurine' fragments were recovered during excavation and dry sieving.
One part of the deposit near the SE cornet of the N-S wall contained much larger fragments of layered wall plaster - these are 0.80 m across max. These also likely to have been derived from the destruction of the building and the angle of the layers within the plaster fragments suggests they had collapsed or had been pulled off the N-S and E-W wall. Many of the plaster fragments actually had curving lines, suggesting they were wall or ceiling mouldings. These plaster fragments were sampled.
Execution: pick
Condition: hot & dry
Consistency: variable - firm to weak
Colour: highly variable - finer grained, less mixed material 2.5 Y light olive brown, but mixed material basically darker 2.5 Y 4/4 olive brown, but with dark grey and orange brown mottling
Texture: variable, but mostly a sandy silty loam
Bedding: highly variable - in some areas massive with poorly sorted mixed material, but there are also areas of massive, finer grained, less mixed material. however, in some of the mixed areas fine tip lines of material were visible
Inclusions: mud brick frags <50mm <5%; occasional plaster/mortar lumps <60mm <2%; occasional scattered flecks of charcoal <30mm <2%;
Post-depositional Features: some rootlet penetration, animal burrows, also salt deposits

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
