Unit 2853
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: pit fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: posthole; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: c. 0.76 m diameter x 0.3 m deep
Discussion: The fill contains lots of lumps of plaster and some other lumps like a dark grey clayish material, some ashy parts, some pieces of salt remains and some charcoal. They concentrate by going towards the base. The pit has been cut in half section . The layers and the bottom was not visible so that the rest half of the pit has been dug 5 cm more.
It may be a post hole because it is very near to the wall and has another wall just at the parallel of it. If it has been dug above the floor this could explain the plaster lumps in it and the other building materials.
Recognition: Clear change from surrounding soil, contained large and more frequent fragments of grey clay and plaster and charcoal.
Definition: Contained within cut.
Execution: Half sectioned NW side to base, excavated from edge, towards the middle, excavated in 50mm spits and checked section as control.
Condition: Dry and hard at top, moist towards base.
Consistency: Moderately compact.
Colour: Mixed fill - coclours vary. 10 YR 4/3 brown; plaster fragments 10 YR 7/3 very pale brown, 10 YR 4/1 dark grey.
Texture: Clay silt (30:70)
Bedding: Massive deposit of mixed materials.
Inclusions: Fragments of wall plaster (multiple layered) 40% medium sized; charcoal small fragments 4%; small medium 20% grey clay fragments; 10% flecks salt; 5% fine lenses of ash.
Post-depositional Features: Cracks through root activity, salt.
Basal Boundary: Constructional, abrupt, distinct boundary at base but shows some characteristics with underlying deposit, but differs clearly to sides.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
