Unit 2894
Category: cluster dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: discard scatter,rubbish
Data Category Information: Location: midden; Material: obsidian; Deposition: primary deposition
Description: Scatter:
Flakes and tiny specks of obsidian scatter - basal boundary of scatter uneven i.e. respects the underlying horizon. Therefore no indication of surface preparation before the deposition of the cluster took place. The frags were randomly scattered with no apparent area of concentration.
Fragments were horizontally laid, none were noticed on edge.
[. . . continued in discussion]
Discussion: 2894 consisted of a discrete scatter within deposit 2845 which comprised a series of laminations and lenses of 'domestic' debris. 2894 appeared to have been a discrete event from 2893 as it was scattered over al lower horizon of deposition. This however could have happened close together in time as opposed to a long time apart.
2893 + 2894: It would be interesting to see if they share any characteristics to indicate the time span between deposition which would highlight the use of this space.
Recognition: concentration of micro obsidian
Definition: defined area of scatter
Execution: leaf trowel & brush, following interface from outer edge
Condition: dry, dusty with lots of roots and ants
