Unit 30074
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: activity horizon
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: dark grey clay; Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation); Basal Spit: unpainted
Discussion: a roughly rectangular (in plan) deposit, located within a depression at rthe entrance to Building 131 surface 30074 over lay all of the featurs of this area: Oven 7953. Platforms 7954 and 7981 and the Bench 7966 of platform 7952. Containing a concentration of ladder holes Platform F.7954 is seen as being evidence for the location of the entrance. In discusion withIan Hodder and the subsequenct comparison of similar spatial arrangements in other buildings of the North Shelter, it was seen that there was a controlled movement at the entranc toi these buildings off of the entrance platform past an oven and a hearth and thence into the main space of the building. In the case of B131 this would have been a movement to the NW away from the base of the ladder F7964 (on platform F.7954).
This movement would have been diagonally across surface 30074 and may be reflected in the slope of this context towards the NW.
Sealing pit F7989, a feature associated with the early phase use of the Hearth F7957, over-lying a truncated build-up of earlier layer (30094) against the east side of F7957, and also overlying 30087, a deposit related to a later phase of use of the Hearth 7957: surface 30074 can be placed with an intermediate phase of use of the hearth and associated oven F7953. Intermediary because 30074 is itself sealed by a plaster layer (30055 = 30071 = 30072 = 22642) which overlay the whole area and was itself sealed by later use deposits of the hearth.
