Unit 30554

Category: Layer    dug in 2013

Area: North

Interpretive Categories: Dirty floor

Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: dark grey clay; Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation); Basal Spit: unpainted

Discussion: This unit is part of a dirty floor, which basically covered the whole building, spaces 17 and 18. It was dark grey and quite nice. It was excavated with trowel. It is to be seen as same as/connected with units 30544; 30543; 30542, part of same dirty floor level. When removing this other floors continue and it is quite complicated to follow. This floor unit also contained make up, which I saw fitting to merge. In this part the floor is better preserved than f.e. U.30544.

The reason this dirty floor was split up in four units is because it was physically not connected but truncated/disturbed by f.e. last year, animal burrowing and other features etc.

Consistency: Packed; friable when removed with trowel

Colour: Greyish brown, flecks of white (phytolithes)

Texture: Clay

Bedding: Thick and layered, that is, with packed soil (make up). This was a stamped dirty floor.

Inclusions: Charcoal near the oven and the hearth which is in SE. Also disturbed in that area

Post-depositional Features: Animal burrowing, root etching. Last year's excavation truncated it in the SE corner.

Basal Boundary: Clear. Another floor is below.
