Unit 31406
Category: Layer dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Foundation bricks
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: Considered foundation bricks because of the homogenousity the whole length of the wall, where the previous bricks had been obviously re-used and gave a more heterogenous impression. The bricks of this unit all had imprints of straw, which probably is from drying the mudbricks. The bricks must have been wet for the softer straws to make any form of impression, and the most likely time for a mudbrick to be wet is when it is drying. The straws might have been put on the ground to elevate the bricks, creating some airflow underneath, etc.
The fact that the imprints are continous on all of the bottom bricks is significant, and something to look for when excavating bonded walls F2139, F2012, F2141 and F2008.
Excavated with mattock and trowel.
