Unit 3154
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: infill
Data Category Information: Location: building; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.64 x 0.43 x 0.26
Discussion: (3154) represents a deposit of mixed bricky, clay and plaster material that was dumped beneath [71] (or what remained of it!). In section [186] it appeared to be underlain by a firmer ashy layer, but on excavation this proved to be patchy. The plaster material from (3154) (=1599) underlay as well as overlying the ashy lens visible in section. It is difficult to interpret this deposit, since it represents an already partly excavated unit, for which the unit sheet does not survive. It may have been laid as a foundation deposit for wall [70] to level up the surface beneath it, with a fairly solid material. However, the way that it lipped over what appears to be another wall beneath. [ ] suggests that it could also have been simply an accumulation of "rubbishy" material during the infilling of a room. It seems that the building up of softish, ashy material beneath walls was a common practice. It could be that this was a deliberate attempt to allow the walls of the building to settle into place.
Recognition: Distinguished by the great lumps of plaster and clay
Execution: Trowel and pick
Condition: Very dry and crumbly
Consistency: Firm
Colour: 2.5 Y 5/2 - Greyish brown
Texture: Ashy sandy silt
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: 10 % plaster (some MASSIVE lumps(; 5% bone (small and large pieces); 5% charcoal (small and large pieces); 2% hackberries ( in particular, clustered towards the base of the deposit) occasional obsidian
Post-depositional Features: Salt encrustation, animal burrowing
Basal Boundary: To the east the basal boundary was sharp and clear. The layer beneath appears to be made up of constructional material and was far more homogeneous. The interface between the two was fairly marked by salt encrustation

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
