Discussion: (3111) represents the mortar of wall [71]. Its composition was similar to that of the brick, and only drizzle of it was laid between courses 

Recognition: Hard to distinguish from the brick of [71], especially because it was a very thin layer, but slightly more decorated. 

Definition: Defined in places by cracking and salt encrustation 

Execution: Trowel and pick 

Condition: Dry and crumbly 

Consistency: Very firm 

Colour: Pale brown 10 YR 6/3 

Texture: Sandy silt loam 

Bedding: Massive 

Inclusions: 5% charcoal (flecks and small pieces); 2% clay; <2% plaster flecks 

Post-depositional Features: Salt encrustation 

Basal Boundary: A sharp, clear basal boundary although it was closely bonded to the bricks it was associated with. Defined by salt encrustation in places/
