Discussion: 3173 represents a very mixed layer of material which appears to have been dumped in the corner between walls 58 and 278 and out 1043. It consisted of lenses of a range of material cut with lumps of mud brick, ashy patches , lumps of clay (especially in the corners at the brick) and occasional sandy lenses. Most of it was well compacted and this distinguished it from the layer within the cut, suggests that it represented the dumping of material in this space to provide a foundation for the wall 56 which sat on top of it. The high clay and plaster content of the layer imply that tumbled construction was selected for this purpose. It also contained a large number of bones. These were not distinguished as a cluster, as this would be difficult to define within the context of a partially excavated unit.

Recognition: Recognisable by its high charcoal content and soft texture.

Definition: Defined by cut 1043 to the East and surrounding walls to the North and West.

Execution: Trowel and mattock.

Condition: Dry and crumbly.

Consistency: Mostly firm but friable in places and very firm elsewhere.

Colour: Varies: 10YR 6/4 light yellowish brown was the colour of the main matrix; in patches of clay and ash the colour ranged from 10YR 5/2 (greyish brown) - for ashy patches - to 10YR 5/6 (yellowish brown) for clayey lumps.

Texture: Varied - mainly ashy sandy silt loam, but some patches of sandy loam, silty clay loam and clay.

Bedding: Compound layer - a very mixed deposit.

Inclusions: 10% animal bone / horn (some burnt), several pieces of jaw and a piece of horn; 5% charcoal (flecks and large lumps); 8% plaster (some large lumps); <2% shell; <2% hackberries; <2% obsidian; 2% plant silicats; 2% coprolite; 2-5% clay/burnt clay lumps.

Post-depositional Features: Salt encrustation and animal burrows.

Basal Boundary: Sharp / irregular basal boundary.
