Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: foundation cut; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 0.62 x 0.41 x 0.23 m

Discussion: 3194 was a layer of blocky clay material dumped within cut 1043. It was loose and heavily encrusted with salts and some sort of (manganese) formation on the surface of the lumps. It seems to represent another episode of material deposition to provide some sort of foundation for wall 56 which sat above it. It had relatively few inclusions other than bone which distinguished it from the layers above 3173 and beneath.

Recognition: Distinguished by its blocky crumbly texture.

Definition: The uneven definition between 3194 and the layer above 3173 but the texture was clearly different.

Execution: Trowel and pick.

Condition: Dry and crumbly.

Consistency: Firm.

Colour: 2.5Y 5/4 light olive brown, 7.5YR 4/6 strong brown.

Texture: Clay loam, with patches of sandy silt loam mudbrick.

Bedding: Massive.

Inclusions: 2% charcoal flecks; <2% obsidian chips; 5% bone - mainly large pieces.

Post-depositional Features: Heavily encrusted with salt and truncated by a mole-rat hole.

Basal Boundary: The basal boundary was very uneven, but quite distinct and prominent.
