Unit 3228
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: accumulated deposit
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: 3 m N-S x 1 m E-W x 0.04-0.05 m
Discussion: Eight spit of infilling in space 156. Only E part E of section.
Only 4-9 cm deep because I hit a possible floor to the S end, and possibly even at the N end. This fill is different from the one on top of it, it is darker and more clayey. Excavated in 4 parts, the E part first. The W part has been numbered (3241-3242,-3243. NE corner (0.95 x 0.8 m) excavated in 1997. Baulk material between (3228) and (3241/42/43) dry sieved as (3228). Plant remains of basket/mat under baulk. 7 cm radius coils in spiral about 10 rings. Other phytolith-material above it and to the S. Sampled.
Final discussion;
(3228) is part of an accumulated deposit on top of the last floor (3253) in space 156. The other parts are numbered (3241-43), excavated with baulk between them. This deposit seems to have accumulated in the room after it was sealed off with a blocking (F249) of the entrance.
The soil is clayey and dark and has more charcoal to the N.
Under this material I found 2 mats consisting of siliceous plant remains, which were both resting on the floor under (3253) but they were numbered as the material above them. This means one of them was numbered (3228) (X2). The same situation concerns the clay ball found on the surface of (3253) but was numbered (3228). The mat (X2) was consolidated and lifted as a whole artefact.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
