Unit 3242
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: accumulated deposit
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple
Dimensions: 0.75 N-S x 1.12 m E-W x 0.05-0.14 m
Discussion: (3242) is soil above a trampled surface (3253), but under a fallen part of the W wall (3239/40). Divided in 4 parts with baulks left between them (the other numbers being 3241,3243,3228).
X1 - a scapula resting against the wall, aligned to it with the broadest part pointing S. The soil seems layered here and the scapula is lying on these layers.
X2 - a polished bone ring in the bottom part of the soil of (3242) lying on the surface under it.
Towards the bottom of the unit, nearer the surface under it, gradually becomes more clayey and a little more grey. Baulk between (3241) and (3242) dry sieved as (3242). Plant remains of basket found under baulk consolidated.
NB Micro. morph. sample S4 is taken in baulk between (3242) and (3243). The baulk is dry sieved as (3243).
Plant remains: basket, 13-14 rings radius 11-12 cm. The imprint is on the floor under the layer (3242). The rings seem to be in a spiral, ca 4-5 mm wide with about 2 mm between them. The remains have been consolidated and lifted as a whole artifact/find. They were on the surface of the floor under this material (3253).
Recognition: Darker than the infilling above.
Definition: Clearly defined from soil above/under.
Execution: Excavated with trowel, divided, leaving baulks.
Condition: Moist.
Consistency: firm
Colour: 10 YR 4/4 dark yellowish brown
Texture: clay and silty clay (clay towards bottom)
Bedding: massive, but layered next to W wall + maybe towards the bottom
Inclusions: charcoal 5%, siliceous plant remians towards the bottom
Post-depositional Features: animal holes, salts
Basal Boundary: the surface below seems trampled, sharp distinctness, distinct contrast, smooth surface, flat
