Unit 32330
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Primary disturbed skeleton,Secondary cranium deposition
Description: Skull with red pigment and thin white layer. Disturbed by animal burrow and possibly by later burial cuts. Uncovered but only partially excavated in 2016.
Discussion: Skull with red pigment and thin white layer. Disturbed by animal burrow and possibly by later burial cuts. Uncovered but only partially excavated in 2016.
Without further excavation, the nature of this deposition is unclear. The skull is located to the south of Sk 30040/30045, and slightly lower down. May be a secondary inclusion in the cut made for 30040/30045. However, the nature of the plaster fill around 30040/30045 and the fact that this cranium is outside of that plaster fill suggest that this may be an earlier, separate deposition event. Just before the end of excavation of this feature in 2016, the proximal end of a right humerus was uncovered, as was the distal end of a femur. These bones were in a location suggestive of a flexed postcranial skeleton - possibly in articulation with cranium 32330. Further exploration necessary.
May 2017: Further excavations revealed that the right humerus and distal femur were in articulation with skeleton 32330 (that is to say the cranium exposed in 2016). The majority of left side and spine and ribs as well as some of the right side of the skeleton were present in articulation - the parts of the right side of the skeleton were removed during secondary inhumations and might be pushed to the north side into F7961. This will be determined with further analysis of the skeletons found in features 7961 and 7963. But if it turns out that parts of this skeleton were pushed to the north (F7961) it might be interpreted as this skeleton belonging to the primary burial and all the other skeletons from F7961 and F7963 as later, secondary, inhumations.
