Unit 32371
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Plaster floors
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: raised area (platform); Material: dark grey clay; Deposition: multiple; Basal Spit: unpainted
Discussion: 3-4 plaster floor surfaces representing repasting of floor on this platform. As with other floors in this area, the surfaces consist of a thin make up layer & plaster floor. Plaster contains impressions of botanical remains-probably Straw or chaff which may be debris or part of construction process.
As with the layers removed above, the area around feature 7991 (post installation? In NW corner of platform) is much paler in colour-possibly because it was scorned due to high temperature burning or possibly because there was something in this corner which protected the surface?
Prioritized (along with other floors 32344 & 32365) to find out more about organic material-is this the remnants of matting, part of the construction process, or the remnants of processing/craft activities?
Feedback showed that the material was mostly grass & leaves and is incorporated into the matrix of the plaster floor, so it looks like this material has been added as part of the construction process, as a temper or binding agent within the plaster rather than matting or the result of processing activities.
The latest of these floors had the highest amount of preserved organic remains, perhaps indicative of better preservation in the layers most exposed to burning in this building.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
