Unit 3312
Category: Cluster dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Matting,Phytolith Scatter
Data Category Information: Location: midden; Material: phytolith; Deposition: primary deposition
Dimensions: 1.8 m x ~1 m x 1mm
Description: The cluster contained bright white phytoliths. distributed randomly and spread within a yellow ochre coloured deposit. The phytoliths appear to be heads of plants. Overlapping with this cluster is an area of puddling (see plan 98/71).
Discussion: Concentrated area of phytolith scatter - disorientated - at first believed to have been matting with yellow ochre! On further exposure disorientation and scattered nature plus organic nature of yellow residue indicated more a scatter than deliberate.
Possibly wind derived scattering in 'open' area or deliberately deposited and as consolidating a very wet area in external space 115. immediately to the south was a puddled area - very lumpy which the phytoliths respected, e.g. continued over, which very clearly had been a very wet patch. Towards the edges it petered and a scatter were found all over surface 3181 but not so concentrated. concentration could also have been due to puddling and thereby sticking to wet area.
Recognition: Intense consentration of phytolith and yellow material.
Definition: On eastern edge fades out fairly abruptly, whereas on southern and western edge fades gradually, the phytoliths carrying on further than the yellow deposit. On northern edge, continues up to midden section.
Execution: Exposed with leaf trowel and tooth pick and unbrushed.
Condition: Very good but faded rapidly.
