Unit 3389
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: collapse of oven lining
Data Category Information: In Situ: non in-situ; Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: mortar; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 0.2 m E-W x 0.2 m depth x
Discussion: Collapse of oven lining on W of oven.
Deposit consisting of burnt/scorched lining and brownish grey silt clay. Not sure if this is deteriorated mudbrick fallen in when side collapsed, it looks similar, or is backfill (3137) seeping through gaps. This event seems to have happened after the last use of oven (3147) (charcoal + ash) but before deliberate backfilling.
Recognition: Not recognised as a separate unit until oven roof removed and it could be seen clearly. Luckily most of this context was left in as it was thought that the orange that could be seen might be in situ oven lining. However, sample (3137:52) may be slightly contaminated with this unit.
Definition: From W wall 93 slopes down steep to N and E overlying charcoal/ash layer (3147).
Execution: Leaf. Initially 1/2 sectioned.
Condition: Dry, hot, covered.
Consistency: friable
Colour: 10 YR 5/2 greyish brown with lenses of 10 YR 6/4 light yellowish brown
Texture: silt 70%, sand 10%, clay 20%
Bedding: frequent 50% large fragments of burnt clay/silt up to 0.12 x 0.01 m, occasional 2% white clay (plaster), 5% charcoal frags. up to 0.01 m, 5% salts <2 mm, 5% burnt reddish brown silt/clay
Inclusions: compound; lenses of burnt roof with brown silt between varying from horizontal to 45 degrees (angle up to W)
Post-depositional Features: salt, root action
Basal Boundary: distinct/anthrpogenic (well natural really if it collapsed)/smooth/slightly pitted/sloping down to W
