Interpretive Categories: Basal scorching,Layer in oven

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 0.9m N-W/S-E x 0.6m

Discussion: The layer of brown/black burnt material was visible on the surface, and found to extent under the grey ash and orange layers. It was difficult to excavate the layers separately so the deposits may be slightly mixed, although I have attempted to distinguish their separate characteristics on the unit sheets. About 1-1.5cm under the initial surface there was a few patches of crumbly hard orange and white/yellow material, and a greater amount of charcoal, and burnt fragmented bone. The layer of ash into a more compact layer of the same colour containing charcoal fragments and slightly sloping upwards towards the edge.

SF: This is the basal scorching and fine affected deposit of underlying deposit. An area of in situ burning as an 'open' fire in space 115.

Recognition: Dark brown material in 'oven' deposit.

Definition: Slopes off on all sides.

Execution: Half sectioned and troweled.

Condition: Slightly walked on.

Consistency: Very friable on surface and slightly less powdery lower down.

Colour: Variable as mixed with other deposits. 7.5YR 2/5 black, 5/2 very dark brown.

Texture: Silty, lower down more hard crumbly material.

Bedding: Dark brown for 1 cm then more mixed.

Inclusions: A lot of charcoal in the more compact material/layer under the powdery surface layer. Paches of white/yellow crumbly material containing charcoal and orange crumbly material. ~5-10% some fragmented bone.

Post-depositional Features:

Basal Boundary: Diffuse basal boundary (change in compaction only). Contrast faint, form smooth and has a gradual slope from east to west. Lots of charcoal at basal boundary.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
