Data Category Information: Location: external; Material: occupation; Deposition: multiple

Dimensions: 2-3 m / 3.7 m/ -

Discussion: This surface is under a horizon of compact layers/lenses of phytolith and yellow material, and has the in situ burning deposits on it (3611) and (3365/3600/3601). The surface is very compact compared to the more friable material on top. The overlying layers of phytolith with yellow material may thus be associated with the use of this surface for activities indicated by the burning.

Several fire events ocurred on this surface which the plan does not fully indicate. In section it is now clear that this 'surface' horizon extended and are most of the the eastern area of space 115 (SF).

This was not excavated as this number as it consisted of several despositional events. Surface description only (SF).

Recognition: Very clear, smooth horizon sloping down from "oven" material. Yellow surface.

Definition: Defined to north by extent of excavation (midden section under wall) to E slopes off above "oven" material (3365), (3601) and (3600), to south edge of excavation + wall 270, to south slopes off.

Execution: Trowel.

Condition: Dry.

Post-depositional Features:

Basal Boundary: Abrupt, but became a little more diffuse further N. Contrast is fairly distinct as the overlying layer consealed a lot of yellow material and phytolith. The form of the boundary is wavy in the S half and slopes downwards from E to W, and has a fairly abrupt slope from N to S. Has a hollow in the middle.

Finds Room Information:

All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
