Interpretive Categories: basin/bin,posthole

Data Category Information: Description: posthole

Dimensions: 0.22 m deep; 0.45 m E-W x 0.50 m N-S

Discussion: Cut feature of unknown function. It was lined with plaster (of the same unit that extended to N and W of this feature (3364)). However, this did not cover base of the feature so it seem unlikely that this was a basin or bin unless the base has been truncated.
It could be a post hole, there is one on the opposite side of the room but which is of a much more regular shape. This does not explain why it was lined with plaster though, unless the plaster was used as some kind of post packing which was deposited at same time as surrounding layer.
There is still a possibility that it is a lower compartment of bin 257. I have made the cut for bin 257 only extend up to its edge so that any option can be taken.

NB/ in post ex, I moved this to part of post retrieval cut 2707, the plaster fill appears ti be redeposited , collapsed when post removed and these later units represent the original incomplete excavation of the cut (sf feb 01)

Recognition: This area has always been lower here (this year). At first not sure whether this was part of bin 257, not fully excavated. 'Fills' (3630) (ashy deposit), (3642) (charcoal rich deposit) and the remnants of Roddy's (2789) called 'bin collapse' which was left in baulk section were excavated. However this was not the base of the cut. A plaster layer (3364) covered an area of over the base of bin 257 and beyond northwards and continued around the edge of this cut. When this was excavated this cut was seen to be cutting through the mixed plaster and silt layer beneath (3653). However the plaster layer (3764) did not cover base of this cut only lined the sides. Also seen in profile from cut (2707).
