Area: South
Interpretive Categories: infill,make up
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: floor (packing only); Material: mortar; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 0.375 E-W x 0.06 N-S
Discussion: (3698), tiny unit up to the E-W baulk. It is placed beneath the unit (3393) (the edge of the fire place). (3698) contains slightly different soil from its surroundings, it has darker colour more plastic, clayish/silty texture.
Possibly it is an infilling of a fire place because;
1) it has clear boundaries on surface and profile
2) it is located beneath a later fire place
3) it is going down deeper than its surroundings.
Recognition: Dark gray colour, the unit has clear boundaries visible both on section and surface, has been recognised easily .
Definition: Boundaries are not very clear. It is up to E-W baulk the difference in colour and composition of the soil made it easy to see the difference between (3698) and its surrounding.
Execution: Excavated by leaf trowel, started at the edge.
