Unit 3709
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: infill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: foundation cut; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Dimensions: c.1.40 m E-W x c.0.80 m N-S x 0.04 m thick
Discussion: A new number was allocated at this horizon of the infilling beacuse of a small area of scorching. It does not appear to have been an in situ fire as there was no associated ash debris, the basal boundary was slightly scorched suggesting hot debris deposition which has fringed the surrounding area.
Infill pretty much as above.
April 2000.
This should be allocated to the infill of the building below, truncated by cut [4336], basically equivalent to [3747/3370/3604] but I've not moved it 'cos it's such a small layer , this should however be noted should any contamination come to light. (SF).
Recognition: While the excavation of (3703) was being made on the base of the layer the trace of a wall was found and an area covered with charcoal in the middle of the unit. So after those finds a new number was given to start excavating from on the wall.
Definition: Area of infill defined by walls on all sides.
Execution: Mattock and trowel.
Condition: Moist.
Consistency: firm
Colour: the deposit itself is 10 YR 5/4 yellowish brown, the plaster within it is 2.5 Y 7/3 pale yellow, the clayey stuff is 10 YR 5/1 gray
Texture: silty clay
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: 5% flecks and fragments of charcoal, fragments of plaster and building material
Post-depositional Features: some root activity
Basal Boundary: the basal boundary was hard to distinguish since the deposit underneath was so much like (3709), it can be called an unclear a bit wavy basal boundary

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded
