Discussion: (3912) represents a strip of burnt oven debris which appears to have been the product of the demolition of oven F.269. The remainder of this deposit was excavated in 1997 (2819) or otherwise lies beneath the baulks. The excavation of this portion was left as it appeared to run beneath the plaster 'lip' feature F.289. This still seemed to be the case when it was excavated in 1998. F.289 seems to have been placed directly above the demolished oven debris (3912) and to be merged with it in places (probably because the plaster was laid wet). (3912) therefore provides a foundation for feature 289, resulting in a raised plastered edge, perhaps to contain the oven debris from oven F.290 to the W which seems to have been built at about this time.
