Unit 3995
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Oven entrance platform
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: raised area (platform); Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.56m east-west x 0.34m north-south x 0.02m thick
Discussion: Heavily scorched deposit lying in the entrance to F269 and slightly overlying lower packing of this feature. Also lay at eastern entrance to F293. Appears to have formed a small platform across which hot material was removed from F269 and probably also F293. Level of scorching suggests there may also have been some burning in situ on this platform.
Recognition: Clear hardened layer in entrance to F 269
Definition: Clearly harder than surrounding deposits, with clear edges
Execution: Trowel
Condition: Hard, slightly moist, with no apparent truncation
Consistency: Very firm
Colour: Dark brown
Texture: Silty clay
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: Moderate charcoal flecks
Post-depositional Features: Occasional insect and root holes

Most of it is dark brown and burnt, but there are a few fragments of unburnt, very unweathered bone.
